Spring has officially sprung, and that means it’s time to open the windows, shake off the dust, and give our homes a fresh start! But before you start tossing things left and right, let’s talk about how to spring clean the eco-friendly way and how you can safely get rid of hazardous materials at DeBary’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, April 12, 2025.
Sustainable Spring Cleaning Tips
1. Declutter with Purpose
It’s easy to fill up trash bags when you’re in a frantic cleaning mode, but before you do, take a moment to think: Can this be reused, donated, or recycled? Clothes, furniture, and household items in good condition can find a second life through local charities, thrift stores, or even community swap groups.
The City of DeBary helps support the Neighborhood Center of West Volusia (neighborhoodcenterwv.org). Their thrift store is a great way to keep donated items in our community while helping "Feed the hungry, house the homeless, and prevent homelessness in our community." Donations are welcome daily until 3:00 PM, and for larger items, a convenient pick-up service is available by appointment.
Learn more about donation pick-up at neighborhoodcenterwv.org/the-thrift-store.

2. Choose Green Cleaning Products
A fresh, clean home doesn’t have to mean a house full of harsh chemicals. Many conventional cleaning products contain toxins that can be harmful to both our health and the environment. Instead, try natural alternatives like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice as they’re just as effective and much safer! Need a simple all-purpose cleaner? Mix equal parts vinegar and water, add a few drops of your favorite essential oil, and you’re good to go!
3. Refresh, Don’t Replace
Before you replace something with a brand-new version, consider if it can be repaired, repurposed, or upcycled. Sometimes, a fresh coat of paint, a little deep cleaning, or some creativity can breathe new life into old furniture, décor, or clothing. Bonus: You’ll save money and reduce waste at the same time!
4. Recycle Right
We all want to do our part, but it’s important to know what actually belongs in the recycling bin. Items like plastic containers, cardboard, and glass are generally safe bets, but electronics, batteries, and certain plastics require special disposal. Not sure where to take them? That’s where Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day comes in!
