Saving Water Never Goes Out of Style: Tips for Conserving Water at Home in Florida

Water is a precious resource, and conserving it is essential, especially in Florida, where droughts can be a common occurrence. By adopting some simple water-saving habits at home, we can all do our part to help protect this vital resource. Here are some easy tips on how you can help and contribute to water conservation efforts.

Tip #1 - Turn Off the Tap

One of the easiest ways to conserve water is to turn off the tap when you're not using it. This can apply to brushing your teeth, washing your hands, or washing dishes. By turning off the tap, you can save gallons of water per day, and it's a simple habit to adopt!

Tip #2 - Use a Bucket to Collect Water

When you're waiting for the shower to warm up, collect the cold water in a bucket instead of letting it go down the drain. You can use this water to water your plants, clean your floors, or even flush your toilet. It's a great way to make use of water that would otherwise go to waste.

Tip #3 - Fix Leaks

Leaky faucets, toilets, and pipes can waste gallons of water per day. By fixing leaks as soon as you notice them, you can save a significant amount of water and reduce your water bill. Plus, it's a great excuse to put your handyman skills to the test.

Tip #4 - Use Water-Efficient Appliances

Using water-efficient appliances can help you save a significant amount of water and reduce your energy bill. Look for appliances that are ENERGY STAR certified, as they use less water and energy than their counterparts. Plus, it's an excellent excuse to upgrade your home appliances. Hello, home makeover!

Tip #5 - Take Shorter Showers

Taking shorter showers is an easy way to save water. You can limit your shower time to 5-10 minutes or even take a navy shower, which involves turning off the water while you soap up. Plus, it's an excellent way to save time in your morning routine. If you're anything like me, taking a long, hot shower is almost a therapeutic feeling—sadly, it's extremely wasteful!

Tip #6 - Follow Volusia County Water Restriction Guidelines

Throughout the year, depending on whether or not daylight saving time is observed, Volusia County has different watering restriction guidelines in an effort to preserve water. If daylight saving time is observed, homes with odd-numbered addresses or no addresses may water on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Homes with even-numbered addresses may water Thursdays and Sundays. On Tuesdays and Fridays, business may water. When daylight saving time is not observed, homes with odd-numbered or no addresses may be watered on Saturdays, even-numbered homes on Sundays, and businesses on Tuesdays. Water is not allowed between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
